RATCHET & CLANK HD REVIEW
Insomniac games just released their latest installment in the Ratchet and Clank series, this time re-vitalizing their original game from the PS2 days. Not only has the game been completely amped up in terms of graphics, the gameplay itself has evolved into a smooth and rewarding experience. If you haven’t picked this bad boy up yet, I highly recommend you do. This game (and most other ratchet and clank games) are just downright fun and don’t take themselves too seriously. They remind me why I love video games, because video games are FUN guys.
Gameplay is similar to the more recent PS3/PS4 games, and allows you to choose from a 3rd person shooter experience, to a lock on / strafe mode. There are also some new guns to choose from, like the “pixelator” which turns everything into minecraft-like graphics, and a weapon that can turn your enemies into hilarious sheep. I do kind of miss the “burping blowfish” gun of the past, but I guess the sheep will have to do. You also get a cool hovercraft at one point and there are some unique boss battles where you are flying around, grabbing ammo, and fighting baddies. You can only use this accessory for certain levels though, which is a bit of a bummer to be honest.
The story is pretty good. Usually plot takes a back-seat in these games, and I generally skip most of the cut scenes to be honest. I did find myself a bit bored at times, but overall it’s pretty interesting, and almost gets dark at one point. It’s also pretty nice to see how ratchet and clank originally met, especially if you never played the original game.
There are a ton of puzzles in this game like usual, especially when you are playing as Clank. In the past I despised playing as Clank, but in this game they managed to make it fun (finally!). There are a serious of tasks you have to complete which involve adorable little robots, who you can assign different roles for, and I was genuinely stumped a few times. This game seems geared for kids, but it’s truly a game for all age groups to enjoy.
This game is just fun. It’s not very long, but it has strong replay value, so that’s not such a big deal for me. Plot is fairly good, but that’s not really what we play these games for is it? We just wanna fight aliens and robots with hilarious weapons and commentary. Go buy this game, you won’t be disappointed.
