UNCHARTED 2 REVIEW
The Uncharted Franchise is by Naughty Dog Studios, the producers of The Last of Us, as well as everyone’s favourite Jak & Daxter. Nathan Drake is the star of this game, and boy is he the bomb when it comes to likeable protagonists. Uncharted 2 is an action adventure, third person shooter game for the PS3.
So we begin the game in a bit of a shitstorm, as our pal Nate is hanging from a train car on top of a mountain during a blizzard. After climbing out of peril, he has a flashback, which shows how he got there in the first place. He is a treasure hunter by day; I mean he really is Lara Croft’s counterpart, who has teamed up with two Australians in the search for the Cintimani stone which will lead to Marco Polo’s treasure. During the adventure the group discovers they aren’t the only ones on the hunt, as they battle a crew of Serbian mercenaries along the way.
The plot of this game is downright cinematic, and Nathan Drake is about as charismatic as it gets. Uncharted 2 won Game of the Year for 2009, and is in my top ten games of all time. If you haven’t picked up this game, be sure to play it soon, especially since Uncharted 4 is being released sometime in 2016!
If you have played the Last of Us and enjoyed yourself (and really, how could you not?) then you will dig this game. The combat system is really intuitive, with quick equip buttons assigned to your directional arrows for multiple types of weapons, as well as things like rocks, grenades, etc. You can go stealth by crouching behind barriers, and take out weapons in silence from behind. There is also a ton of climbing involved, and Nathan often has to work with a partner to reach certain areas – something Naughty Dog seems to have trademarked.
The music is super upbeat in this game, and very “Indiana Jones goes on an adventure”. This definitely isn’t a dark game style, although Nathan goes through some tough times, and the music works with his upbeat character. His personality and signature “catch phrases” make the game feel lighthearted, and at times almost cheesy (in the best way possible), so the music reflects this environment.
Uncharted 2 won game of the year for a reason, so trust me you can’t go wrong purchasing this game. Naughty Dog knows whats up, and they produce awesome games that are complex, humourous, and have great gameplay. If you like action adventure games & movies, go buy this ASAP – you won’t be disappointed.
